MTN

MTN is gathering some balls—as it claims subscribers are abusing their voicemail system which they have been serving for free.

Anyone who uses MTN or calls MTN may be familiar with the message ‘the subscriber you are trying to reach is out of coverage area’. According to MTN, it cost them over 500 million dollars a year in Ghana alone to play that sweet message to people.

And as such, they will start charging both their subscribers and callers—anytime they serve that message.

ScrewLife.Com’s editorial team were furious when we heard this— why should both the caller and receiver be charged for “out of converge area” message.

We reached out to MTN’s Public Relation’s Department in Accra to find out about this new seemingly extortionate policy—and according to Gifty Antwi, head of the department, MTN does not want to burden only its subscribers with the cost so they saw it prudent to share the cost for the caller to also take some of the charges.

That makes sense though…

Gifty Antwi explained that, this means “if someone calls you using Tigo and MTN serves them with “Out of Coverage Area” message, instead of MTN taking 2 Cedis from your credit, they will only take 1 Cedi and take another 1 Cedi from the other caller.”

After our call, our Editor pointed it out that—what about MTN just covering all areas including certain busy parts of Accra to avoid these charges.

So we decided to call Gifty Antwi at MTN’s headquarters to ask her this; and then we were served with ‘the subscriber you are trying to reach is out of coverage area’ message. We tried again and we got the same message. When we realized, all our credit was gone…

“Everywhere You Go” indeed.
