Ghanaian Prisoner In Saudi Arabia Gets Impregnated To Avoid Death Penalty

Having been in jail for six years, and facing the death penalty, it would come as no surprise to hear that Esther Esi Darkoaa Darko had plenty of time to sit around and wonder what her final days would be like.

However, according to information reaching ScrewLife.Com, Esther spent most of her time plotting a way to escape her sentence. While she won’t be leaving the prison anytime soon, thanks to her resourcefulness, she will be leaving behind her death sentence.

The 30-year-old Ghanaian was arrested in Jeddah in 2009 and subsequently found guilty of illegally shipping Bibles and other Christian literature into the country. This was not her first offense, but the courts decided it would be her last, and sentenced her to death in 2010. After losing an appeal in 2011, Esther began looking for any opportunity to escape the death penalty.

Beginning of April 2015, Esther is reportedly to have been sneaking into the male ward of the prison to sleep with a 27-year-old male inmate named Farouk Omar. This, according to reports, went on for time till officers found out that Esther was pregnant. As to how they got to know, officials say they took her to the hospital after she started vomiting incessantly.

According to Saudi Arabian law, the execution of nursing women is anathema to the rights of the child set forth in the Quran and Sunna, although the woman may be sentenced to death. Saudi Arabia has ratified the Revised Arab Charter on Human Rights (2004), which prohibits execution of nursing women as contrary to the interests of the infant for at least two years after giving birth.

A police investigation has been launched to review Esther’s scheme, but in the meantime, the Omar Farouk’s jail term has been extended.
