Actress Yvonne Okoro Detained For 6 Hours At Heathrow Airport Because of Her Accent
Actress Yvonne Okoro turned up at the premiere of her own movie-Rebecca in London on Friday, very late—at around 11pm when she was supposed to arrive at 9pm.
And it was not her fault; because, immigration officers at London’s Heathrow Airport had earlier detained her for over 6 hours as they struggled to communicate with her in an attempt to establish her identity.
Apparently, Yvonne Okoro arrived at Heathrow Airport on Friday in an expensive pair of Christian Louboutin shoes, holding a Louis Vuitton wallet and pulling an LV travel suitcase.
At the immigration desk, officers on noticing her expensive collectables asked her what she did for a living—and she stated that she was a super star, an actress.
Immediately, the immigration officer opened her passport and found that, her occupation is noted as a student—which led to further questions.
For over an hour, the immigration officer, her supervisor and senior supervisor struggled to understand a word of what Yvonne Okoro was saying because of her own version of British/American accent—she sounded confused in her mixed accents, making the officers to think she was up to something fishy.
Quickly, they suspected her of hiding something; either her true identity or she was an imposter—because of her bad American mixed with British accent and also, because none of the workers had seen any of her movies and yet she insisted she was a super star.
Since the immigration officers could hardly understand anything she was saying even though she was speaking English, a Ghanaian interpreter was booked to come in—and this person took several hours to arrive.
Eventually, through the help of the interpreter, the immigration officers became convinced that Yvonne Okoro was not an imposter, was not hiding anything—but was just putting up an accent which they could not understand a word of it because it was deeply confusing.
Her passport was handed over to her and she was free to leave the airport; but that was after over 6 hours of hustle and questioning.
