Tamale High Court Rules That A 36-Year Old Man Cannot Divorce His Wife Just Because She Cannot Have Children After He Made Her Abort 11 Times While They Were Dating
It was jubilation for Ramatu Idrissu and her family at Tamale High Court yesterday after a judge refused a divorce application by her husband-Musa Idrissu, a 36-year old pharmacist.
Musa had tried to divorce his wife a year ago, citing her inability to have children–and the fact that doctors have said she cannot have any as his main reason.
The girl’s Uncle who lives in South Korea wrote a letter to the judge hearing the divorce case, bringing the judge’s attention to the fact that Ramatu cannot have children today because while dating Musa, she had 11 abortions, all caused by Musa.
Ruling on the case, Justice Issaka Mumuni said it wouldn’t be equitable to allow Musa to get rid of Ramatu just like he wants to and that he has refused the divorce application.
He, however, added that should Musa wants the court to grant his divorce, he must meet with Ramatu’s family and compensate the wife for his contribution to her current predicament.
Apparently, the family is asking for 126 cattle, a two bedroom house and an undisclosed amount.
